Summer Snowflakes, Leucojum aestivum

Loddon Lily or Summer Snowflake, Leucojum aestivum

And Summer follows Snow! Whereas snowdrops have three main petals and three tiny inner ones, the 6 petals of this ‘summer snowflake‘ or ‘loddon lily’ are all the same length, with green markings at their tips. They were found at Withymead Nature Reserve, a tiny oasis of spring blossom and birdsong near Goring in Oxfordshire. Bordering the River Thames on one side and the Ridgeway Path on the other, the grounds are a hidden gem of woodland and marshland. The reserve was home to a keen naturalist and is now preserved by the Anne Carpmael Charitable Trust.
